Tip!: The Places feature requires an active Plex Pass Subscriptions subscription for the Plex Media Server account.
Overview
As a Plex Pass subscriber, you have the ability to access and use location information about your photos, a feature we call “Places”. As a premium feature, your Plex Media Server can group and organize photos based on geographic location. Once your photos are tagged you’ll be search based on location taken, as well as discover related photos as you go through your library.
The location information for your images is stored locally on your Plex Media Server, so you have control over your privacy.
Availability
The following Plex apps currently support our Places feature.
- Android (mobile)
- Android TV
- Apple TV
- iOS
- Plex Web App
How to use Places
When a new image with relevant location information is added to your photo library, the image will be automatically tagged. The location information will typically be included when images are taken on any GPS-enabled device. There are currently a few ways you can make use of location tagging in your Photo library.
Info on Photos
When viewing photos on a supported Plex app, you can open up an info or collections view via a button on the photo.
This will then show you location information for the image, as well as images with similar tags.
Note: Map view is currently only supported on the Android Mobile and iOS apps.
Using the mobile Android app here, you can see that there are 7 other photos taken this day as well as 3 more photos taken in West Vancouver.
Search
When searching, results can also be returned based on photos location tags.
Above, any images that were tagged with “Vancouver” are returned when searching.
