Use Your Google or Facebook Account with Plex

There are three ways to use Plex:

  • Using your Google account
  • Using your Facebook account
  • Creating an account with your email address and a Plex password

When using a Google or Facebook account, you don't need to make another password for Plex. Your Plex settings and device access will be secured using your Google or Facebook account.

If you've already created an account with a Plex password, you can add Google or Facebook (or both!) to your existing account.

Supported Apps

You can sign in to your Google- or Facebook-linked account directly in the following apps:

  • Main www.plex.tv website
  • Android
  • iOS
  • Plex Media Player
  • Plex Web App

Other apps use a 4-character code to link the device, so you'd simply sign in to your Google- or Facebook-linked account on our main website and link the device on the www.plex.tv/link page.

Note: If you wish to use the local Plex Web App that comes bundled with Plex Media Server, you need to be running Plex Media Server v1.8.4 or newer.

Notes on Security & Privacy

Plex takes your security and privacy very seriously. We support Google and Facebook accounts to make it easy to start using Plex and sign in on new devices.

  • Google and Facebook login are optional features.  If you don't want to use Google or Facebook login, you'll never have to.
  • When signing in, Plex only requests the minimum permissions and information from Google and Facebook. We don't ask for access to your life story, can't read your email, and can't spam your friends.

There can be security benefits to using Google or Facebook login instead of a Plex password. See Additional Security Benefits for Google or Facebook later in this article.

Getting Started

When opening a Plex app for the first time (or after you've signed out), you'll be given three choices for signing in.

New Users

You have the option to use your existing Google or Facebook account. There isn't a separate page for "sign up" or "sign in" with these accounts.

  1. Choose either Continue with Google or Continue with Facebook.
  2. A new window from Google or Facebook will appear and ask you to confirm.
  3. If you haven't signed into Google or Facebook on this device, they may ask you to enter your Google or Facebook password.
  4. You will be signed in.

The next time you need to sign in, just follow the same steps.

Adding Google or Facebook to an Existing Plex Account

If you've already created an account by typing in your email address and creating a Plex password, you can add Google or Facebook to make it easier to sign in on new devices.

Same Email Address as Your Plex Account

If your Google or Facebook account has the same email address as your Plex account, you can add Google or Facebook when signing in to a supported Plex app.

  1. Sign out of Plex.
  2. When signing in to Plex, choose either Continue with Google or Continue with Facebook.
  3. A new window from Google or Facebook will appear and ask you to confirm.
  4. If you haven't signed into Google or Facebook on this device, they may ask you to enter your Google or Facebook password.
  5. Plex will recognize that you already have a Plex account with the same email address as this Google or Facebook account.  For security, Plex will ask you to type your existing Plex password.
  6. You will be signed in, and your Google or Facebook account will be linked.

After this first time, you will be able to quickly sign into your Plex account on any device by tapping Continue with Google or Continue with Facebook.

Different Email Address from Your Plex Account

If the email address on your Google or Facebook account is different from the email address on your Plex account, you can manually link your existing account to Google or Facebook using the Account settings in the Plex Web App.

  1. Sign in to the Plex web app.
  2. Visit your Plex account page.
  3. On the Accounts tab, click the Edit button next to Linked Accounts.
  4. Link your Google or Facebook account.
  5. A new window from Google or Facebook will appear and ask you to confirm.
  6. If you haven't signed into Google or Facebook on this device, they may ask you to enter your Google or Facebook password.
  7. Your account will be linked.

From then on, you can use the Continue with Google or Continue with Facebook buttons to sign into Plex.  You can also continue using your Plex password by choosing Continue with Email.

Tip!: You can link an account to both Google and Facebook if you wish, so long as they both use the same email address.

Additional Security Benefits for Google or Facebook

Some features from Google and Facebook can add security to your Plex account.

Add a Plex Password to a Google or Facebook Account

If you first started using Plex with your Google or Facebook account, you don't have a Plex password.  You can add a regular password to your account at any time. This allows signing in to the Plex account without Google or Facebook, using the account email address and password.

  1. Sign in to the Plex web app.
  2. Visit your Plex account page.
  3. In the Password section, you should see Not set, showing that you do not have a password yet.
  4. On the Accounts tab, click the Edit link the Password section.
  5. Enter your new account password (be sure to choose a strong, unique one!) and then confirm it.
  6. Click the Save Changes button.

You can now sign in to your account using a password by choosing Continue with Email on any Plex login page.

Using the Windows Store App

If you're using our Windows app from the Windows Store, you won't be able to sign in directly using your Google or Facebook account. To be able to sign in, simply add a password to your Plex account (see above). You'll then be able to sign in to the Windows app using the email address and password.

Oops, I accidentally created a new account instead of linking to my existing Plex account!

Though rare, it's possible that you could accidentally create a new Plex account if you try to link to a Google or Facebook account, but the email address on those accounts doesn't match the email on your Plex account. You can fix this, though.

  1. Sign in to the accidentally-created account.
  2. Visit your Plex account page.
  3. Use the Delete your account action at the bottom of the Accounts area.
  4. Sign back in, using the desired Plex account this time.
  5. Manually link to the Google or Facebook account as outlined earlier.
