The Android app allows you to adjust a number of settings. You can access these from the Settings entry using the gear icon in the Navigation Menu.

 

Note: Not all individual settings will be available on all devices. Settings may be hidden on devices or platforms when they are not applicable, or my not be shown depending on subscription status.

Account

Sign In

If you have an existing Plex account you can enter your username/email and password for the account, then tap Sign In to sign the device into your account.

Subscribe to Plex Pass

If you are signed in with a Plex account that does not have a Plex Pass subscription you can choose to sign up for a Plex Pass through the app store here.

Sign Out

Should you wish to disconnect the app from you Plex account you can simply tap Sign Out to sign your Plex account out of the app.

Tip!: Signing into your Plex account will assist the app in discovering any local or remote/shared servers, along with activating the app if you have a Plex Pass subscription.

Sign In Automatically

If you’re in a Plex Home, you can use this option to have the app automatically sign in to the currently-selected user and bypass any PIN for that user. This might be useful if you’re the only one that ever uses your phone and you don’t want to be bothered by the user menu appearing.

Experience

Application Layout

Determines if the layout the device will use:

• Mobile– The device will use the app layout designed for mobile devices.
• TV – The device will use the big screen app interface. (will not work on devices with only touch interface)

Play Theme Music

Choose if you would like the Theme Music played while browsing TV Shows.

Remember selected tab

Select this option to have the app remember which tab you last selected for each source (ie. Recommended, Library, Collections, etc.)

Notifications

New Item in On Deck

Send a notification when an item is added to a library that causes your On Deck to change. You can specify all or specific libraries. (Note that while other library types may be listed, this only applies to “TV” libraries.)

New Content Added to Library

Send a notification when new content is added to a Movie, TV or Music library. You can specify all or specific libraries.

Playback Started

For server admins, you can be notified when a user you share with starts playback from your Plex Media Server. In the setting, you can choose which owned servers will report playback as well as for which shared users you wish to receive notifications.

New Devices

This notification is sent the first time a device accesses your server for any reason.

Database Corruption Detected

If your Plex Media Server detects corruption in its database. You can configure for all or individual servers that you administer.

Database Backed Up

Whenever your server successfully completes a database back up via Scheduled Tasks. You can configure for all or individual servers that you administer.

Downloads

Use Mobile Data

If enabled, Sync will use cellular data (if no WiFi connection is available) when performing a sync. This option is only visible for devices that have a cellular/mobile connection.

Storage Limit

Set a limit on the amount of local storage space that Mobile Sync can use for synced content.

Sync Storage Location

Select the location that Mobile Sync will use for synced content.

Quality

Video Quality :Max Video quality to download. Server will transcode if lower than bitrate of file.

Audio Quality : Max Audio quality to download for audio files. Server will transcode if lower than bitrate of file.

Player Experience

Auto Play/Play “Up Next” videos automatically

When the Post Play screen is presented after playback, choose whether an “up next” video should be played automatically after a short countdown. This is often referred to as Autoplay.

Cinema Extras

The cinema trailers setting controls how many cinema trailers will play before a movie. Source settings can be controlled through Plex Media Server.

Rewind on Resume (Plex Pass Required)

When resuming playback of a paused item, you can choose to have the playback “rewind” and start X number of second prior to the point at which it was paused. This can be helpful in cases where you left the playback paused for an extended period. (Note that this does not impact starting playback via the Resume button on the details page of a media item or starting playback of an in-progress item directly from Continue Watching, for instance.)

This setting defaults to None or you can choose various values between 1 and 30 seconds.

Skip Intro (Plex Pass Required)

For TV show content that has intro markers this option determines if it will automatically skip the intro or even show the button. Choices are:

• Disabled: Don’t show the Skip Intro button at all
• Manually: Display the Skip Intro button and the user must interact with it if they want to skip the intro (Default)
• Automatically: Skip the intro sequence without having to hit the button

Skip Ads in Recorded Content (Plex Pass Required)

If you have content recorded from a Plex DVR and have enabled the ability for Plex to try and detect the commercial breaks, then a skip commercial button will be displayed by default. This setting allows you to control how ads detected in Plex Media Sever library content can be skipped. It will not skip past ads in our free, ad-supported Live TV or On-Demand content. Choices are:

• Disabled: Don’t show the Skip Ads button at all
• Manually: Show the Skip Ads button and the user must interact with it if they want to skip the ad break (Default)
• Automatically: Skip Ads without having to hit the button

Skip Credits (Plex Pass Required)

For content that has credit markers this option determines if it will automatically skip or even show the button. Choices are:

• Disabled: Don’t show the Skip Credits button at all
• Manually: Show the Skip Credits button and the user must interact with it if they want to skip the credits (Default)
• Automatically: Skip the credit sequence without having to hit the button.

Show Up Next (Plex Pass Required)

When a video finishes, there is an “Up Next” screen. This is the same screen that the auto play timer will appear on or when a movie finishes. Choices are:

• When Video Finishes
• During final credits: (Default) Video will minimize and continue playing in the Up Next screen. Return to full screen by selecting the minimized video.

Passout Protection (Plex Pass Required)

By default auto-playing content will not continue to auto-play the next item, if it’s been more than 2 hours since the user last interacted with the app. This is to help prevent content from continually playing if you fall asleep. Choices are:

• Never Prompt (Disable Passout Protection)
• After 1 hour
• After 2 hours (Default)
• After 3 hours

Auto Play Countdown Time (Plex Pass Required)

By default, the Up Next item has a countdown timer before the next item in the queue will auto play. You can adjust that to play immediately or select from different countdown presets. Choices are:

• Immediate
• 5 seconds
• 10 seconds (default for mobile players)
• 15 seconds (default for TV players)
• 30 seconds
• 60 seconds

Video Quality

Automatically Adjust Quality

Select to allow Plex to automatically adjust the quality of your video based on your connection speed.

Limit Cellular Data

You can choose to have Plex automatically limit the video quality when playing video over a cellular network to reduce your data usage. This option is only visible for devices that have a cellular/mobile connection.

When enabled, you will be able to choose from several quality options.

Remote Streaming

Adjust the quality used when streaming content over the internet (either from a remote Plex Media Server or from an online source).

Choose the desired quality level. Higher qualities will require a faster network to support. If you set the quality too high, you will experience slow video playback and frequent pausing.

Play Smaller Videos at Original Quality

When enabled, the app will try playing the original video without conversion if it’s smaller than the quality set above. When possible, that will preserve the full quality, but may result in some pausing.

Home Streaming

This controls the quality used for local Wi-Fi streaming on a home network.

Use Recommended Settings

When recommended settings are enabled, the app will automatically try to play videos smaller than 20 Mbps at original quality. We recommend leaving this setting enabled.

Home Streaming Quality

If the recommended settings are disabled, you can manually choose the quality limit for home streaming.

Music Quality

Remote Streaming

Select the maximum streaming quality that is allowed for music/audio playback when streaming over the internet. This can be used to help reduce the bandwidth (or data) used when remotely streaming high-quality audio.

Sharing

Show Camera Roll Media

Allow other Plex apps to access photos and videos from your device’s local Camera Roll.

Advertise as player

Enable or disable the ability for other Plex apps to fling content to the device and control it remotely.

Advertise as server

Allow other Plex apps to access content synced to your device via Mobile Sync.

Network discovery

Allow Plex to search for media servers and players on the local network.

Warning: These advanced preferences should not need to be altered by most users.

Device Name

Friendly name for device.

Audio

Audio boost

Boost the audio volume when audio is being both transcoded and downmixed from surround sound to stereo.

Subtitles

Burn Subtitles

Determines if the server should burn in subtitles when converting video, depending on the subtitles format. Avoiding burning in subtitles improves server performance. Available choices:

• Always – When used, subtitles will always be burned into the video, regardless of the original source type of the subtitle.
• Automatic – (Default) Burn in subtitles when the subtitle is an image-based format (e.g. VOBSUB, PGS, SUB/IDX, etc.) as well as for complex ASS/SSA subtitles.
• Only image formats – Only burn in subtitles when the subtitle is an image-based format (e.g. VOBSUB, PGS, SUB/IDX, etc.)

Subtitle size

Allows you to select the font size for subtitles.

Player

Prefer Synced Content

When enabled, the app will play synced versions of your media (when available) instead of streaming from your Plex Media Server.

H264 Maximum Level

Specify the maximum H264 level that is playable by the device.

Audio Passthrough

The app will present video streams with multi-channel audio as-is.

Optional audio support

If the device reports that it supports them. You can enable AC3, EAC3, DTS and/or TrueHD

Use Android Media Player

Video playback will use the standard Media Player provided by the device.

Use External Player

Video playback will use an external player.

Note: When using an external player, the app can only allow Direct Play and watched status will not be tracked.

Privacy

Share crash reports

Allow Plex to automatically report crashes to help us improve the application.

Manual connections

Enable manual connections

You can manually specify the IP address (IPv4) and port for a Plex Media Server to which you want to connect.

Tip!: So long as you Sign in to Your Plex Account in both the Android app and your Plex Media Server, the app will automatically have connection information for the server and you won’t need to use this.

Allow insecure connections

When enabled, it means that this device is allowed to make insecure connections to a Plex Media Server if secure connections fail. Available choices:

• Never – (Default) Never fall back to insecure connections without specific action from the user
• On same network as server – Allow fallback, but only when Plex Web App and the Plex Media Server are on the same network
• Always – Always allow fallback

Debugging

Network logging

When you enable network logging in the Android app, for the next 20 minutes all log messages from the app will be sent to a logging service.

Tip!: Only enable network logging if you’re also reporting details about an issue in our support forums. Network logs are not proactively reviewed.

Share Debugging Data

Using this option will open an email in your default email application. The message will have a zip file attached that will include detailed app logs (often up to several days’ worth) as well as local device state data that’s useful for investigation.

If you’re having an issue with the Android app, you can use this option to email the zip file to yourself and then attach the zip to a forum thread where you post details about the issue.

Wifi Address

The Wifi IP address of device, can be helpful when looking through logs

Server Port

When you enable network logging in the Android app. You can view the logs being sent by going to [WifiIP]:[ServerPort]/logging on the local wifi network
