Roku Logs

For investigating tricky issues, we may ask you to share your logs. There are two logs generally of interest in these situations:

  • Logs from the Roku
  • Logs from your Plex Media Server

Logs from the Roku

Remote Logging

The easiest way to share logs with Plex team members is usually to enable remote logging. When you enable remote logging on your Roku, for the next 20 minutes all log messages from both your Roku and your Plex Media Server will be sent to a logging service. A handful of members of the Plex team have access to those logs and can pull them up without you having to download or upload anything. Only the Plex team has access to the logs though, so other forum members won't be able to help you.

Enable Remote Logging

To enable remote logging:

  1. Sign In: Make sure you have a Plex account connected to your Roku. The logs are indexed by Plex username, so the option is only available when you have an account connected.
  2. Enable Logging: Enable logging on your Roku, which is found under Settings > Log Level > Debug.
  3. Enable Remote Logging: Enable remote logging, which is found Settings > Remote Logging > Enabled.

Reproduce and Report the Issue

Reproduce the issue you're having. Remote logging only lasts for 20 minutes, so reproduce the problem right after turning it on.

Post a description of the problem in the forums if you haven't already. Then just let us know your Plex username and about when you turned on the logging so we can find it.

Standard Roku Logs

The Roku doesn't have logging in a traditional sense because the device doesn't have a filesystem we can write to. So there are no logs from previous times you've used the channel and nothing you can copy off of the box. Instead, we've developed a way to store some log messages while you're using the channel.

The method used to get those logs varies slightly depending on whether you're running the original Plex for Roku channel or the early preview of the new app.

Remember, logs are only stored while the channel is running. So you can't reproduce a problem and exit the channel, then go back in and expect to see anything interesting in the logs. Once you have the logs, you can post a description of the problem in our forums and attach the logs.

Using the Online Plex for Roku Launcher

Using a computer on the same network as your Roku player, you can make use of the Plex for Roku Launcher tool. To do so:

  1. Start at the main Roku home screen on device
  2. Open the tool in a browser on the same network as your Roku player
  3. Enter the local IP address for the Roku player and hit Enter (if you don't know the IP, you can find it under the Network configuration on the Roku player)
  4. Once it shows that a Roku was found, Select the appropriate Channel (typically, that will be Plex (public release))
  5. Ensure that Enable debugging is checked
  6. Hit the Launch button to launch the Plex channel
  7. Reproduce the issue in the Plex channel
  8. Use the Show Logs button to let you see the logs from the device

Plex for Roku Channel

  1. Enable Logging: Enable logging on your Roku, which is found under Settings > Log Level > Debug.
  2. Reproduce the Issue: Reproduce whatever problem you're seeing. Log messages aren't stored when logging is disabled, so you need to enable logging before you reproduce the problem.
  3. Download the Logs: In a web browser on your computer, go to http://your_roku_ip_address:8324/logs (You can find the IP address of the device under Settings > System > About from your main Roku home screen.)

Plex Media Server Logs

Your Plex Media Server keeps a log file that's often useful: "Plex Media Server.log". Where exactly the file is stored depends on your operating system.
