Play Queue Support - Plex Home Theater

Warning!: Plex Home Theater is deprecated and no longer in development. We have focused our efforts on the newer Plex Media Player app instead and recommend moving to that app.

The Play Queue feature in Plex allows you to queue up videos or music for continuous playback. You can randomly shuffle music from an artist, album, or genre, or binge on a TV series or other videos.

Note: Play Queues are not playlists. Full playlist control is not yet supported in Plex. You cannot, for instance, save Play Queues as separate playlists.

We recommend reviewing the general "Play Queues" article for information on the basics of how Play Queues work, the differences between Play Next and Add to Up Next, what Implicit vs Explicit Queuing mean, and more.

Interface

Dashboard

When you have a Play Queue, you'll see a Play Queue item on the home Dashboard.

If you enter that menu item from the Dashboard, you'll see the details for that Play Queue.

Left Actionbar

When navigating around Plex Home Theater, if you have items in a Play Queue that's actively playing (or paused), you'll see a small Play Queue item appear in the left actionbar. You can select that item to enter the Now Playing screen.

Play Queue Details

The details view of the Play Queue lists the items in that Play Queue on the right and provides information about the current item and playback controls on the left. The view is slightly different for music, television, and movie content.

On the left, the progress bar and playback controls are shown:

The progress bar displays the current progress within the item as well as the duration on the right. Below that are the actual playback controls. From left to right:

  • Repeat: Cycle through the repeat options, which are to not repeat (blank), repeat the current item (1), or repeat the entire Play Queue (all)
  • Previous: Go back to the previous item in the Play Queue
  • Play/Pause: Toggle between pausing or playing the current item
  • Next: Go to the next item in the Play Queue
  • Stop: Stop playback
  • Now Playing: Enter the Now Playing view

Now Playing

When actively playing an item, you'll typically be on the Now Playing screen.

Music

The Now Playing view for music shows the current track being played as well as the upcoming track. Information for the current track is shown at the top with the album artwork and the track title, album title, and artist name to the right of that. Progress on the current item as well as the duration is shown in the center along with playback controls. At the bottom, artwork and information about the next track is displayed.

The controls in the center provide access to, from left to right:

  • Repeat: Cycle through the repeat options, which are to not repeat (blank), repeat the current item (1), or repeat the entire Play Queue (all)
  • Previous: Go back to the previous item in the Play Queue
  • Play/Pause: Toggle between pausing or playing the current item
  • Next: Go to the next item in the Play Queue
  • Stop: Stop playback
  • Play Queue: Enter the Play Queue details

Video

For video content, Now Playing is the standard video playback view. The current Play Queue details view can be accessed via the control to the right of Stop.

Accessing Queue Commands

A Play Queue can be started or controlled in Plex Home Theater using either the controls on the interface's left actionbar, via the context menu, or using shortcut commands.

Interface Actionbar

When navigating within a Library, you'll see Play All and Shuffle items available below the Options item on the left actionbar.

When used, the Play All and Shuffle actions will be used for the items currently being displayed. So, if you're viewing an entire Library, then it will play or shuffle all items in the Library. In a music Library, you can also use it at the artist or album level. Similarly, in a television Library, it can be used at the series or season level. You can even filter a Library and then Play All or Shuffle against the filtered results.

Context Menu & Shortcuts

When looking at particular items within a Library (for example, an artist/album, series/season, or individual movie), you can use the context menu or shortcuts to play things or perform Play Queue actions, too.

If there are currently no items in a Play Queue of that type (music vs video), the context menu will give you the Play Next option.

Once a Play Queue has been started, the context menu will allow you to use Play Next or Add to Up Next.

When in a Play Queue Details view or looking at the Play Queue entry on the Dashboard, you'll also see a Clear context menu option. That will clear out and remove the current Play Queue.

Keyboard

There are several keyboard shortcut keys useful for interacting with Play Queues.

  • P - start playback of current item (this will work for individual items as well as artists, albums, series, or seasons)

  • C - open the context menu

  • Q - perform the Add to Up Next action

  • tab or H - exit to main menu but continue playback (tab again to return)
