Controlling the Windows App

The Windows app (available via the Windows Store) provides rich support for controlling the app via keyboard, remote control, gamepad, and even using your voice (through Cortana).

Keyboard/Remote/Gamepad Control

While many people will use a mouse (or touchpad/touchscreen) to interact with the Windows app, you can also use a keyboard, remote (such as the MCE remote), or gamepad (such as the Xbox controller).

Cortana Voice Control

When running on Windows 10, our Universal Windows app includes support for voice control via Cortana. The following information outlines currently-available commands and gives some examples.

Commands

The two basic commands you can initiate for Plex when using Cortana are Play and Shuffle. When using them, you tell Cortana to Play or Shuffle an item along with the media type. A basic voice command would look like:

  • Play the [media type] [item name] on Plex

There are a number of media types you can specify and control via Cortana:

  • movie or film
  • show or tv show
  • episode
  • album
  • artist
  • track or song
  • library
  • playlist

Examples

You can combine the above media types in the basic syntax to control a wide variety of playback with Cortana. The following are just a few examples of possibilities.

  • Play the movie The Force Awakens on Plex
  • Shuffle the show The Office on Plex
  • Play the episode Diversity Day on Plex
  • Play the artist Journey on Plex
  • Shuffle the album Escape on Plex
  • Play the song Don't Stop Believin' on Plex
  • Play my Classic Movies library on Plex
  • Shuffle the playlist Top Hits on Plex
