Note: Plex HTPC is currently a forum preview and can be downloaded from the forums.
Plex HTPC is for Home Theater users that connect their Personal Computer directly to their TV, typically controlling it using a third-party remote.
Plex HTPC is currently available for the following platforms:
- MacOS 10.13 or later (64-bit only)
- Windows 10 or later (64-bit only)
A version for Linux is currently in development.
The app is currently a forum preview and can be downloaded on our forums here. Installation follows the platform’s standard installation method.

- Download the Windows Installer
- Run the installer and follow the usual installation prompts to complete installation
- At the final screen, click the Launch button. If you don’t select this, launch the App from the Start Menu, or Desktop shortcut
- Download the Plex HTPC
- Double-click the DMG to mount it
- Drag the Plex HTPC app from the DMG window to your Applications folder
- Launch the Plex HTPC app from the Applications folder
Warning!: The app must be in
~/Applications for auto-update to work properly
Tip!: You can drag the app from the Applications folder to your Dock to allow one-click access to the Plex.
Updating the App
While you can always choose to manually download new releases and run the installer again, the app will automatically update after a restart if it detected an update on its previous launch.
When launching the app for the first time it will have a sign in button on screen. When clicked it will open the the web browser on your computer. Once signed in to your account in the browser, the Plex HTPC app will go to your home page or through the initial setup.

To remove Plex HTPC from your Windows computer, first make sure the app is not running.
Initiate an uninstall for Plex HTPC as normal via the Control Panel in Windows.
Then delete the following directory (if you plan to reinstall you may wish to keep this to maintain previous settings and app data):
To remove Plex HTPC for macOS from your macOS computer, first make sure the Plex HTPC.app is not running.
Delete the actual application itself in under Applications (e.g.
Optionally you can also delete it’s App Support folder. (If you plan to reinstall you may wish to keep this to maintain previous settings and app data.)
Using the Finder’s “Go” menu, select Go To Folder… then enter the following in the dialog box that pops up:
Plex HTPC folder inside the Application Support directory.
