While our apps work to give you a great default Home screen, everyone’s needs can be different—and can even vary from device to device for the same person.
That’s where the ability to customize things comes in. Our Plex Web app allow you to easily choose what appears on your Home screen, which media sources are available, and how to arrange the available sources.
Plex Web Setup
When initially launching the Plex Web app or after resetting customization, you will be prompted to make several choices to determine what content is displayed on your home screen and navigation sidebar. Further changes and customization can be done later.
Choose your Preferred Server
If you currently have access to more than one Plex Media Server, you will be prompted to select your preferred server. This will determine the content that is displayed on your home screen and the initial options available to be pinned to your navigation sidebar.
Customize your Navigation
On this screen you can select which sources you would like to have pinned to your navigation sidebar initially. Sources not selected here will still be available by selecting the More
option in the navigation sidebar.
Edit the Home Screen
Customizing what’s included on your Home screen and how it’s displayed is a great way to make Plex work just like you want. Our apps allow you to choose what content appears on the Home screen as well as the content order.
Reorder Home Screen Rows
Using the Edit button found in the top right corner of the Home Screen, you can reorder the rows displayed.
Rows can be dragged up or down in the list, to order things as desired. When you’re finished, Save will apply the changes.
Remove a Row
Using the Edit button, you can also remove specific rows by hovering over the desired row and selecting the red x
icon on the right side of the list.
Tip!: Rows can also be removed by hovering over title of the desired row and selecting the x
icon.
Add a New Row
Adding new rows to your Home screen allows for very powerful customization. For instance, you could have “Recently Added Music” from your music library right alongside the “On Deck” info from your television library.
To add a new row:
- Select the desired source in the sidebar (e.g. Music), ensure you are on the Recommended view.
- Find the desired row (e.g. “Recently Added Music”), hover over the row title and select the
+
icon to Add to Home.
New rows are added at the bottom of the Home screen. You can then reorder them however you want (see above).
Tip!: When adding a row such as “Recently Added Music” to the Home screen, the Home screen row will include items from all libraries of that type on the server, by default. (e.g. If you have two music libraries, the Home screen row will combine recent content from both.) You can control whether a library contributes via the Include in dashboard advanced library setting.
Reset Home Customization
If you would like to revert all changes that have been made to your Home screen, you can do so using Restore Home Screen. This option can be found by opening the Edit button found at the top of the Home Screen.
Edit the Navigation Sidebar
From the navigation sidebar, you’ll be able to choose which source to view, if you have access to more than one. For instance, you might have your own library of photos as well one shared with you by a friend or family member or maybe you have multiple TV libraries of your own. To choose which source you wish to view/access, you simply choose from the navigation sidebar if the item has been pinned to your sidebar (if the source has not been pinned, it can be found by selecting more
from the sidebar). By default, they’ll be arranged with sources from your preferred server listed first followed by other sources located in the More
section.
Reorder Navigation Sidebar
Most people will only have one or two sources available for any particular media type, but some people might have several. In that case, you may wish to customize the order in which they’re displayed—so that your favorite or most commonly-used one is at the top, for instance.
Each item listed in the navigation sidebar can be reordered or unpinned by highlighting the item, selecting the ...
entry, and clicking Reorder
.
You can then select a source and you can then move it up or down in the list to order things as desired.
You can also choose the More
entry to view additional items or to pin them to the sidebar. Using the ...
entry you can pin new items to appear in the main navigation sidebar area (By default, new items will be placed at the end of the list).
Reset Customization
If you would like to completely reset your sidebar navigation and home screen configuration, this can be done by:
- Use
to open the settings menu
- Navigate to
General
under the Web Client section - Select
Show Advanced
- Select
Reset Customization
Selecting this option will direct you back to the Plex Web Setup screen, where you will be prompted to select a server, media providers, and customize your navigation sidebar.
Note: Using this option will reset all customization changes made in the app, including source/home screen ordering. If you have access to multiple Plex Media Servers, you will then be prompted to select a preferred server as well as the initial sources to display in the Navigation Sidebar.
