Using the Library View

Plex Web App initially opens to the Dashboard, which is a view of all Libraries (both owned and shared) as well as items such as On Deck, Recently Added, Recommendations, and more.

Open a Library

To enter a Library, click the name in the sidebar. You'll be shown that Library's contents.

Library Bar

The bar across the top of the Library provides quick access to actions as well as shows the total number of items currently displayed.

In order from left to right, the available actions are:

Switch Between Libraries

The first dropdown provides access to quickly switch between Libraries on the same Plex Media Server.

Library Subsets

The Subsets dropdown provides quick access to common views and subsets of the library items:

Available options are:

  • All - All items in the library
  • Recently Released - 200 items ordered by the Originally Available date
  • Recently Added - 200 items ordered by the date added to the Library
  • Recently Viewed - 100 items ordered by the date last viewed
  • On Deck - The On Deck view for the Library
  • By Folder

By Folder

The By Folder subset lets you browse the media folder structure directly based on the folder hierarchy on disk. By Folder is a sticky setting, letting you use Posters, Details, or List view to browse your drive's directory structure.

Management Actions

These allow you to edit or refresh the Library as well as perform other management actions.

Change Library View

You can view your Library in multiple different way:

Available views:

Posters

The Posters view displays media in a grid of their posters.

Details

In the Details view, posters are displayed along with some other details such as the summary.

List

List view displays a simple list of media titles.

Library Layouts

Each type of Library has some subtle differences in the layout to best suit that type of media.

Movie and Home Videos Libraries

By default, this is simply a display of the posters for items in the Library. You can see examples in screenshots above.

If you select a particular item, you'll see the pre-play screen, which has details for the selected item as well as available actions on the left.

Television Libraries

The Television Library will display all of the shows/series in the Library at the top level. The number of unwatched episodes is shown in a label at the top-right corner of the poster.

Choose a particular series to see available seasons for the show as well as details for that series.

Choose a particular season to see episodes available for that season. Unwatched episodes are indicated with an orange dot.

Select an episode to enter the pre-play screen, which has details for the selected episode as well as available actions on the left.

Music Libraries

At the top level, the Music Library will show you a list of the artists by default.

Choose an artist to see a list of available albums.

Select a particular album to enter the album details view.

Photo Libraries

Opening a Photo Library shows all of the albums inside the Library as well as images at the top level.

Choose an album to see photos within it or choose an individual image to view it.

You can choose the Next or Previous image by clicking the navigation buttons to the left and right of the image. Return to the Library overview by clicking the X at the top right of the zoomed image.

You can use the Play button to start a slideshow and the zoom toggle can be used to enter full-screen display.

Left Actionbar

The actionbar on the left side of the Library allows you to filter and sort, play content, or set up a Sync, among other things.

Options

Use the Options button icon button to open or close the Options sidebar. This sidebar allows you to sort and filter the Library contents.

Type

Television and Music Libraries allow you to view content by different types.

Music

You can view Music Libraries by:

  • Artist - A list of the artists in the Library
  • Album - A list of all the albums in the Library
Television

Television Libraries can be viewed by:

  • Show - A list of the shows/series in the Library
  • Season - A list of seasons in the Library
  • Episode - A list of individual episodes in the Library

Filters

Use the New Filter button to allow you to select a filter to apply.

You can select to apply multiple filters. For instance, you could choose to view unwatched dramas released in 2013.

Sort

Using the Sort controls, you can sort by different criteria. Click the sort type to toggle ascending/descending sorting.

Play All

You can play all items in order from the current view in a Play Queue.

Play Shuffled

You can play all items in a shuffled order from the current view in a Play Queue.

Add to Playlist

Add the current items to a new or existing playlist.

Select

The Select button allows you to select multiple items simultaneously to perform actions on them. Enable Multi-Select with the button in the left actionbar. You can then click or drag on the Library contents to select items.

In addition to the normal actions available in the left actionbar, you can also perform some additional actions when multiple items are selected:

Edit

Mass-edit the selected items to change certain metadata fields.

Mark as Watched

Flag the selected items as "watched".

Mark as Unwatched

Flag the selected items as "unwatched".

Refresh

Refresh the selected items to get new metadata.

Analyze

Perform media analysis on the selected items.

Add to Collection...

Add the selected items to a Collection.

Merge

Merge the selected items together into a single entry.

Delete

Delete the selected items from your drive and remove the entries from your library.

Warning!: This is a destructive action since it actually deletes the source files. It is only available if you have enabled media deletion in the server library settings (and is only available for the server admin).

Sync

You can create a sync job for Mobile Sync or Cloud Sync from the current view.

Optimize...

Set up Media Optimizer to create optimized versions of items in the current view.

Miscellaneous

Searching

When inside a particular Library, the Search box at the top of the Plex Web App will search only within that Library.

Playing Content

Plex Web App has an integrated, browser-based player to allow you to watch and listen to your media content.

  • Open a Library and select an item
  • Hover the pointer over the item and click the ► button that slides up OR
  • Click the item to open the detail view
  • Click the Play button on the left or on the item poster
  • A Play button is also available for items in the Dashboard
