Warning!: No current Plex apps support the playback of ISO, IMG, VIDEO_TS, BDMV, or other such “disk image” format content. We do not encourage users to use such formats.
Note: These unsupported scanners are not compatible with many Plex features such as local trailers and extras files.
The default media scanners in your Plex Media Server will intentionally skip over unsupported disk image format media.
If you for some reason do wish to include these unsupported formats in your library, you can do so by use of a custom scanner. You’ll find an unsupported versions of such a scanner for “Movie” and “TV” Library sections attached at the end of this article. Remember, you will not actually be able to play the disk image content!
Install the Scanner
Scanner Directories
Download the zip file attached at the bottom of the article and extract it. You’ll find the two scanner files together inside a folder.
To install the scanner, you’ll place the python .py file inside a subdirectory of your main “Scanners” directory. For the Movie scanner, it will go in a Movies
subdirectory. For the TV scanner, it goes in a Series
subdirectory. The appropriate location is listed below.
Note: Most users will need to manually create a Movies
or Series
directory inside your Plex Media Server’s “Scanners” directory as one will not exist by default.
Warning!: You must leave the scanner files named exactly as they are on this site. Spaces and capitalization are important. That is: Plex Movie Scanner with Disc Image Support.py
or Plex Series Scanner with Disc Image Support.py
Scanner Install Location
Windows
On Windows, the scanner files are located inside of the user directory.
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server\Scanners\Movies
or
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server\Scanners\Series
OS X
Using the Finder’s “Go” menu, select Go To Folder… then enter the following in the dialog box that pops up:
~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Scanners/Movies/
or
~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Scanners/Series/
Linux
In general, the Plug-Ins folder for the various Linux versions of Plex Media Server will be found under:
$PLEX_HOME/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Scanners/Movies/
or
$PLEX_HOME/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Scanners/Series/
Restart the Plex Media Server
Once you’ve placed the new scanner file in the appropriate location, restart your Plex Media Server to pick up the new scanner.
Using the Scanner
New Library
When creating a new library, you can select the new scanner under the Advanced settings before you save the new library.
Existing Library
Edit the Library
If you’re trying to use the scanner with an existing library, you’ll need to first edit the library to use the new scanner.

Update the Contents
You’ll also need to make a change to your library contents so that the server detects that content has changed. You could do that by editing and reverting a filename or directory name or pretty much anything else that updates the directory modification time
Scan the Library
You can now initiate a library scan, which should pick up the changes.
